JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Basketball is a sport for all ages. Whilst our junior domestic competition age groups start at Under 8 for children aged 7, 8  we also cater for keen basketballers from as young as two years old.

There are three main programs for younger hoopers:

  • Kindy Ball for children aged 2-4, aimed at developing their gross motor skills to assist with their basic basketball skills, ;

  • Aussie Hoopers, for children generally aged 5-8, aimed at developing game skills in readiness for domestic competition;

  • Under 10 Cubs Program, for children aged 7-9, aimed at greater development of skills in readiness for representative basketball either at tournaments as Under 10s, or in readiness for tryouts for the Under 12 VJBL representative program.

Participation in these programs are subject to the various operational and competition programs, which can be found here.

KINDY BALL

Kindy Ball is designed for children between 2 and 4, to help them develop basic gross motor skills such as catching, throwing and shooting.

Kindy Hoops is a development program which is the perfect way to get your child(ren) involved in an all year round indoor sport, learning basic skills, teamwork and coordination in a fun and interactive environment

Put simply, Kindy Hoops is a fun introductory basketball program that is ideal for active children between the ages of 2-4 years old.

The 45 minute session is run in conjunction with our popular Aussie Hoops program (ages 5-8) on Friday, starting at 4:30pm.

The program is all about learning to play basketball in a fun and safe environment, the perfect intro to playing in junior competitions.

The one-hour session is run after our popular Kindy Ball program (ages 2-4) on Friday, starting at 5:15pm.

UNDER 10 CUBS PROGRAM

The Cubs program is a pathway program that help players in our Under 10 domestic age group develop their skills through extra training and games, as a lead in to the Panthers Junior Representative Program that starts at Under 12s.

If your 7, 8 or 9 year old (Under 10s in the calendar year) has a passion for basketball and would like to develop their skills beyond the domestic training and game experience, the Cubs Program might be the opportunity that they are looking for.

Coached by experienced coaches, Cubs participants are given the skill development and match experiences that will give them the opportunity to develop in readiness for the Panthers Junior Representative program once they reach the Under 12 age group.  The Cubs program aims to develop a player's general skills, including shooting, offence, defence and teamwork.

Throughout the program, Wallan Basketball will look for opportunities for the participants to put their skills into practice through inter-club games with other surrounding associations that have an Under 10 development program.

There are also a number of tournaments that are held during the year, including our own tournament at the end of the July school holidays. Where an appropriate tournament is identified, teams of our Cubs participants will be entered.
